Architects for Western North Carolina
Founding Principal Jake Heffington was born in Brevard and raised in the small mountain town of Highlands NC in the 90s. The Highlands-Cashiers area has changed a lot since then, but the landscapes and culture of Western North Carolina continue to make Other Works Architecture come alive.
In serving clients over the last decade our appreciation for the mountains has only grown. We take time to study and understand every project’s site, working to make sure that our architecture responds sensitively to the specific topography, views, and materials that made it uniquely beautiful before we arrived.
We take the same care in understanding our clients. Our process leads to architectures that are client-specific; custom, unique, and fit to the lifestyles of their inhabitants. We do not design from a “style book", instead drawing inspiration from the trialogue between Client, Site, and Architect, and our own experience in building and making.
The Process

Analysis
We begin every project with a detailed site analysis, building code and restrictions review, and a client survey.

Design
Our process during Schematic Design and Design Development is collaborative and iterative, leading to unique solutions for every client and site.

Documentation
Once the design work is complete, we create drawings and project specifications suitable for receiving a permit and for construction.

Construction Administration
During construction, our team meets regularly with the Client and Contractor to solve on-site issues and ensure the build matches the designs.
